An introvert is a person who usually has a specific trait of characteristics – specifically those that might make them seem a bit anti-social or shy.
The truth is being an introvert is more complex than that, and the label is prone to a lot of stereotypes that might not be true. For example, not all introverts are anti-social, but they might come off like that because they tend to require a lot of alone time.

Usually, extroverts enjoy socializing and get their energy from it. On the other hand, introverts get their energy from being alone with themselves, as they often feel drained after a prolonged amount of time socializing.
For this reason, a quiet night at home might be more alluring to the introvert than a party that starts in the late hours of the night. They are also more likely to be reserved at these events and less enthusiastic because of this. This doesn’t mean that introverts can never enjoy these types of activities, just that they have to prepare themselves mentally for it!

Although introverts share common traits, just like everyone else on the planet – no one is the same. That means that every introvert will have different wants and needs from others. In 2011, however, a study showed certain characteristics that more or less most (or all) introverts have:
- Social Preferences: Usually, introverts prefer to spend time with smaller groups of people rather than larger groups. This could be because it is less overwhelming to deal with a select amount of people than an entire group.
- Thinking Patterns: This characteristic refers to the tendency for introverts to be lost in their thoughts. A lot of the time they will be caught up in their imagination or thinking about whatever would be occupying their minds.
- Anxious Thoughts: Introverts might struggle with anxiety on two different levels. Firstly, since socialising can be draining they might develop social anxiety which will make this struggle even harder. It can also manifest when they are alone as they will reflect on past experiences and maybe even worry about future ones!
- Lack of Impulsivity: Whilst extroverts tend to be impulsive, introverts are the complete opposite! They generally will act with restraint and might be hesitant to try new things. They will also most likely keep thoughts and feelings to themselves and might be very insular.

Firstly, when we are alone we are away from many distraction that are usually present when we’re around people. Ernest Hemingway himself said that if a writer wants to create a great piece of work, then he needs to spend time alone.
It’s not just Hemingway whose said something similar though! A psychologist named Hans Jürgen Eysenck also came to the conclusion that creativity and introvention are basically best friends.
His reasoning? Firstly, because working on something alone means more concentration. However, more importantly, because an introvert is usually drained by socialising – they will have more energy for their work!
Therefore,this is another sign of the power of introverts! Maybe you do like to spend a lot of time alone, that’s fine, but why not use some of that time to hone your skills? I’m an introvert myself, and I’ve always done my best creative work when I’m alone.
Sometimes, I also manage to hit two birds with one stone. I enjoy drawing/painting in my free time, so I usually put on a show/movie I’m watching and paint away! The hours pass so quickly that I forget what time I even started. Not only am I allowing my creativity to flow, I’m also allowing myself to recharge after an entire day of socialising and working!

2. Sensitivity and It’s Benefits
Statistically, about 70% of sensitive people happen to be introverts. That means that the majority of introverts tend to be more sensitive than others!

Now for some reason, society has convinced many of us that being sensitive is a bad thing. Some people even believe that it makes someone weak! This cannot be farther from the truth!
Being sensitive helps you be in tune to other people’s feelings! That is a great ability to have, because believe it or not – not everyone can do it!
Moreover, because of the fact that introverts tend to be more sensitive, they are also more aware of social cues! Speaking for myself, I am always more quiet in conversations and without wanting to, I usually end up observing those around me.
Why is this a good thing? Well, that quality makes for great leadership! As a good leader, you need to know what’s going on at all times, right? Well, with the great observation skills that heightened sensitivity gives you, you can achieve that!
Leaders who have a heightened sense of empathy are going to be more effective than those who don’t! Don’t let people tell you that your sensitivty is an issue – it’s actually quite the opposite. Of course there are always extremes and it’s not good to let your emotions get the best of you. Still, the power of introverts doesn’t stop just because you’re more sensitive than others!

3. Creating Meaningful Friendships as a Part of The Power of Introverts
Earlier we mentioned the difficulties that Introverts have with socialising. This doesn’t mean that Introverts don’t have friends or like making friends – far from it!

The main difference between introverts and extroverts is that usually introverts prefer quality over quantity. That doesn’t mean that an extrovert will have low quality friends of course, just that they enjoy meeting larger groups of people.
On the other hand, an introvert is more likely to keep their circle of friends smaller and more intimate. Due to the nature of an introvert’s deep inner world, they might only want to share it with a few people they really trust.
Introverts might also befriend other introverts, which can make for an even deeper and more insightful friendship. It also goes without being said that if our friend group is smaller, we have more time to spend with each other individually too, which creates stronger and deeper friendships!
So if anyone tells you that introverts aren’t social, just remember they are – but not in the way you might think! In a world where the power of introverts seems to be underestimated, remember to stay true to who you are, and don’t ever feel pressured to socialize when you don’t feel like it!
